How TseringTactics turned a beginner series into a chess boom

'Zero to 1500' started as an experiment. It ended with sold-out community arenas and a lot of first rated games.

When TseringTactics created a brand-new chess account in April and promised to explain every move on the way to a 1500 rating, she expected a niche audience. Six months later the series is finished, and her monthly community arenas regularly hit their player cap.

Explaining, not showing off

The series works because she slows down. Every game is annotated in Nepali and English, mistakes are left in, and viewers are asked to predict the next move before she plays it.

A real-world spillover

Several school and college clubs in Kathmandu now run viewing sessions, and local over-the-board tournaments report more first-time entrants this year. Tsering is careful not to take credit for that, but she's happy to host the clubs' players in her online arenas.

What's next

A second series aimed at players already around 1200, and a monthly "ask a coach" stream with titled players as guests.
